Primitive Labs announced an investment from Sony Innovation Fund on 5 October 2026. The funding will support its research into human behavior and the development of Instinct, a platform for testing digital products with simulated customers. The company did not disclose the amount invested, a valuation, the round type or the closing date.
Instinct uses an organization's user research, product analytics and behavioral data to build modeled customer groups. Those customers move through a digital experience, allowing product, design and research teams to examine where a journey becomes difficult or ends. Teams can compare different audiences and versions of an experience before releasing a change.
The company names onboarding, account creation, subscriptions and checkout as examples. These are practical product decisions: a confusing registration step may lose a prospective customer, while a change to checkout may affect groups differently. Instinct is intended to help teams explore those possible responses using the customer information they supply.
Primitive Labs was founded in 2026 by Rohit Talluri, Jean Farmer and Gabriel Fong, who previously worked together at Amazon Web Services. Its announcement identifies San Francisco as its headquarters and also names a16z speedrun as a backer. Sony's investment is a new financial disclosure; the release does not establish when Instinct first became available.
The platform is offered through a company demo. Its product page describes simulated journeys and comparisons that help teams examine customer behavior within an interface. These outputs depend on the modeled audience and supplied product context. An investment announcement does not establish how closely the simulations match a particular company's real users, and the release gives no independent benchmark for that question.
The announced use of funds connects further behavioral research with product development. The release describes work with partners in retail, e-commerce, media, entertainment, advertising and gaming, but does not give a paying-customer count. Monthly recurring revenue (MRR), annual recurring revenue (ARR) and profitability are also undisclosed. There is therefore no reported revenue figure to compare with the investment.
